Still Life #2

This is a charcoal still life I did a little over a week ago. I had set up this entire still life and NOTHING was turning out right, so instead of I focused on this little part of what I had set up. I thought the reflection looked really cool, and it reminded me of M.C. Escher! Doing weird and distorted reflections is definitely something I want to experiment more with, and learn how to add more details.

  1. I think this piece is extremely successful and you should be really proud of it! You were able to capture the characteristics of glass and reflection which are both extremely hard to accomplish. The value range is also nice, you brought out the white highlights and weren't afraid to go dark. Now that you have done this, next time try to include those other pieces. Maybe set up a bunch of glass objects and see what distortions happen. It may be frustrating at times, but I bet the result will be worth it!

  2. Thank you!! I did decide to take away a lot of the detail but next time I try something like this, I think I want to try to incorporate more in the reflection. I think that's a really good idea, I will try that for my next still life. Do you think I should try different mediums as well?

  3. It's always great to try new mediums - why not?! Maybe try ink or watercolor? India Ink is a great medium - it can be hard to control at first (so maybe try using a few times before a large reflection piece) but you can get great values and high contrast. Your use of of charcoal is really nice! How about pastels? That could be another great option - similar but then you'd be using color.
