Longhorn Painting

This is my most recent painting; my English teacher asked me to paint her a longhorn. There are a LOT of layers on the canvas because I kept messing up! I wanted its proportions to be mostly accurate but also alien-like and sort of surreal, as if it were in a desert on a different planet or something. I wanted to make the lines in the texture apparent.

  1. It is really nice to see that you have so many paintings! Even though your paintings don't relate to each other in content, you have developed a nice series of portraits. I have two overarching suggestions for some new paintings. The first, is to think about changing up your perspectives and compositions. Right now, for the most part, your paintings consist of a portrait directly in the foreground, with a limited background. What if we saw more of the person or animal? What if you pushed them further back into space and they were more incorporated into an environment? This could be an interesting problem to solve. How can you still make them focal points without being in the foreground? Light, color and compositional elements can help with this.

My other suggestion is to try using a more limited color palette. Your layering is awesome, and I like that you have developed your own style with multiple colors. I also like your use of cool and warm colors together, and the longhorn is most effective using them. Do you see how the colors really pop? You might find if you limit your palette and are selective about where you use certain colors it will help push some images back and others forward. Say, you choose two warm and one cool, or four colors? If you look at the clown painting, the shadow is effective in pushing the clown forward, however, you may not have needed the shadow as much if the background was a different value or color.

Overall your paintings are quite successful but these are just some suggestions to help you challenge yourself in future pieces!

  2. I agree with you, I feel like most of my paintings are portraits that show the entire face. I recently started a piece that shows a little more of the body and I have an idea for a more landscape piece. I will definitely brainstorm ideas for more full body pieces.
The piece I recently started working on, the person consists of blues, and the background is yellowish-orange, but I think it's a good idea to experiment with a smaller colour palette. I'm excited to try both things!!
