You Know Something's Not Right When the French Man Is Worried

I just finished this one! It's another portrait, I know... but it was just a quick painting I did on impulse and that I had fun with, without thinking too much or having to be really precise.

Figure Class and McNay

These are all from a nude figure drawing class I went to. (pencil)

Quick Sketches

These are a few sketches and observing drawings I did in my sketchbook.

Oil pastel. I still have a hard time with oil pastels compared to charcoal when it comes to making reflective surfaces.

Painted Still Lifes

This is a quick first attempt at painting a still life. It was really difficult for me, I guess I'm really used to using charcoal when doing shiny surfaces.

This is my second painting of a still life; I'm still working on it. I chose a REALLLLYYY simple corner in my house and a vase with a rougher surface.

April 2012-Blue Gypsy

This is something I made in April. At first I wanted it to be gypsy mother with her infant but I literally painted her baby like 924580430923845 times and it either looked like a loaf of bread or one of Akhenaten’s alien babies! So, I decided drop the idea of the baby. I don’t really have a story for this one, I just really wanted to paint quiet/silent/still/sad night that’s still beautiful in some way. It’s not the night she’s afraid of, it’s what the night will bring in the morning. In more technical terms, I tried to limit my colour palette, I did less brushstrokes just to try something new and I avoided making her looking straight on from the canvas so she (the character) could look more of a part of her setting (instead of a portrait). I don't like how the hand turned out.

Module #4

I really wanted to try what M.C. Escher did with reflections. The top one is the last one I did, the bottom one is the first one I did. A very specific thing I ran into was the difficulty of making a perfect circle to represent the sphere! And if it isn't a perfect circle, it ruins the contortions (like in the second one). I really enjoyed experimenting with this because it gives you a completely different point of view on the world around you--LITERALLY! I want to try more viewpoints from reflecting objects and see what happens. I also saw that having contrasting shadows and lights is VERY important, and I want to see what happens if I try to use colour. Again, I'm really sorry I misread the instructions.
